Overview

We are looking for a Materials Scientist or Materials Engineer with mechanical and materials failure analysis experience. Responsibilities

In this key position, you will perform root cause failure analysis and forensic evaluations of failed industrial and consumer products, analyses of failed components in machinery, and evaluations of industrial materials failures of all types.  Experience in coordinating and participating in joint metallurgical laboratory analyses, including SEM-EDS, FTIR, DSC and X-Ray examinations is desired.  A strong exposure to fractography and intimate knowledge of failures due to environmental exposure such as Environmental Stress Cracking, Stress Corrosion Cracking and Corrosion-Fatigue is required.  You will be required to be polyvalent and capable of handling diverse failures such as: industrial machinery and accompanying components, all types of vehicle mechanical components as well as building materials ranging from cementitious products to plastic pipes.   Knowledge of national codes and standards related to design, fabrication, and testing of various products is a plus.  Preparing oral and written reports that document observations, analysis, and conclusions will be required.  Other duties include gathering photographic evidence, conducting investigations to document operating conditions and overseeing laboratory testing by third parties.  You may be called upon to deliver expert witness testimony in deposition and trial. 

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Materials Science with 5-10 years’ experience.  Generally, at least 3 of those years must have been acquired outside of academia. 
  • P.E. License not required if candidate has Ph.D. but beneficial
  • HAZWOPER, Safety and/or Fire Investigation certifications will be considered but not required.
  • Manufacturing and/or field experience (acquired outside of laboratory setting) of at least one of the following would be considered highly beneficial:
    • Polymers (PVC, CPVC, Nylon, ABS, HDPE, PP…)
    • Glasses, ceramic and refractory materials
    • Cementitious products
    • Composites (fiberglass, carbon, … )
    • High temperature and/or corrosion resistant alloys
  • Independent judgment; strong analytical skills, excellent verbal and written communication skills 
  • Must have knowledge of a variety of computer software applications (MSWord, Excel, and PowerPoint)

Personal interests and hands on experience in manufacturing, construction settings will be considered a plus.
